Assessment Tests that will allow you to evaluate your progress at strategic points in the training. These test your actual transcription skills, just like the test you will be asked to take when you apply for a job. They include a complete grading key, and a chart to compare your scores with average student scores at each point in your training. Includes review assignments if you don't meet or exceed average scores.
Final Exam so you can be certain you have the required skills before you apply for a job.
Complete contact information on companies that will hire new medical transcriptionist to work at home at the skill level you will have obtained after finishing the course.
Timer software to use for timing your transcription tests, and log sheet for keeping record of your scores so you can easily track progress. A comprehensive medical speller that installs into MS Word. It includes over 60,000 medical terms, diseases, drugs, medical equipment, and surgical techniques. In addition to the course, you will need to purchase a medical dictionary and a digital transcriber.
and even more with bonus software (with certain sale promotions).
Either Dorland's or Stedman's are good dictionaries and can be ordered from your local bookstore, Amazon, or Barnes and Noble.
You will need to purchase a digital transcriber after you have studied the first few chapters of the terminology textbook, unless you have no prior terminology knowledge. If you do not have prior knowledge then you would not need the digital transcriber machine /foot pedal until after you completed the textbook in full. If you do have good knowledge then you can start after chapter 4 on your transcription part of the course along with the textbook. A good one is available at Start Stop - Click Here for Models it sells for $199 including shipping.
Don't buy the model that plays Real Audio and costs more. Medical transcriptionist don't use Real Audio files. You want the one that plays the .wav files. The digital transcriber plugs into a serial port /or USB port (you choose which one is right for your computer) on your computer, and is no more complicated than plugging in a printer, but should you need help, the company will talk you through the process of connecting it.
You don't need the transcriber at the beginning of your course work, so can budget its purchase if necessary.
There are 2 ways to take the course and which way you choose will depend on how quick you will need your digital transcriber. For example: If you have no prior experience / or are on a tight budget then you will want to complete the textbook in full first before moving on to the transcription part of the course, reports, etc. This means you would not need the digital transcriber until the textbook is completed.
However; if you have prior medical experience, terminology experience, are a Nurse, etc. then you would start the transcription part of the course after the first few chapters in the textbook. This would mean that you would need to order your digital transcriber shortly after you receive your course (if not before then to have when the course arrives). **NOTE** If you are on a tight budget you can still do the textbook in full / complete first even if you have prior exp. We are just letting you know the 2 options in taking the course.
