MTatHome Syllabus for our Medical
Transcription Training Course
Requirements
for the MTatHome Medical Transcription Course:
- AHDI Book of Style third edition
- AHDI Book of Style Student Workbook
- A Medical
Dictionary (Stedman’s or Dorland's) CD is preferred; however it can be book
format.
- Digital USB Foot Pedal
- We recommend getting Computer headphones.
- You will need to have MS Word installed on your computer, 2007 or 2010
Version.
- You will need to have a Windows based computer. XP, Vista or Windows
7.
- You must speak English to take our course. Our course is in the English
language only at this time.
- You do NOT have to live in the USA to take our
course.
- You do not have to have Internet access to study our course however you
will need to log in to the student area and participate in any of the student chats you
want to attend or to access any of our tutorials and course other information in the
student area. Once you start working as an MT you will need Internet access. It can be
dial-up however a lot of doctors do prefer DSL or broadband because it does not take as
long to upload or download the work files.
MT Class Length:
Our Medical Transcription
Class/Course is self-paced. The average length of time from start to finish is about 6
months. This is just an average time frame. Those that have prior medical knowledge or
training such as an RN might be able to finish the course a little sooner. If you work a full
time job while taking our course it might take you a little longer to finish the class depending on
how much time you can devote to studying.
460 Hours of study for
this MTatHome Medical Transcription Course. Recommended study time is 4 to 5 hours a
day. However, we do realize that not everyone can put in this much time each
day.
Different Course Options:
MTatHome has three different course
options to choose from. Which one you choose will depend on if you already have some of the books
and or equipment that you will need for this course. You do not need to take all three courses; you
would just need to choose one of them.
Course #1 comes with the basic course materials for your
training. It does not
come with the digital USB foot pedal or the three mandatory items for the
course. (The three mandatory items in addition to a foot pedal are the AHDI book of
style, book of style student workbook, a medical dictionary.) You would need to have your own
computer that runs Microsoft Windows. **NOTE:
Course #1 is only available in the USED Courseformat at this
time.**
Course #2 Bonus comes
with all of your mandatory books, Stedman’s electronic medical dictionary CD, and a digital
USB foot pedal. The Course 2 Bonus is a complete course. You would need to have your own
computer that runs Microsoft Windows and purchase your own headphones.
Course # 3 includes
everything that the course to 2 Bonus has, as well as additional reference books and software that
you can use in both your training and when working as an MT. You would need to have your own
computer that runs Microsoft Windows.

I.
First
Part of the Course:
First Part of
the course will be your Medical Terminology training which will cover many aspects of the Human
Anatomy with detailed pictures and diagrams, medical terminology, pharmacology, and much
more.
*After each chapter
you will have exercises within the textbook and chapter quizzes on the Test
CD. These results will be sent into
MTatHome.

the next part of your course you will learn Grammar

You will learn how
important it is to follow the rules of patient privacy and what to do in certain
circumstances.
III.
Third
Part of the Course:
You will learn to use the digital foot pedal with the software that will play these files for
you.
You will learn to load your dictations into the
dictation player software.
We will cover the study of medical reports in the many different medical fields in your course
training. You will learn how the reports should be formatted.
Practice Dictations - Many Hours of Authentic
Doctor Dictations in the many different types of medical fields with keys so you can see how well
you are learning.
You will have assessments and tests with Authentic Doctor dictations in the different medical
fields.
Practice
Dictation:
When completing our third part of the course you
will get experience with real Dr. Dictations of the many different medical fields. You would deal
with situations such as doctors that may be hard to understand, doctors that may talk fast or
mumble and many other scenarios that you can run into when working as a medical
transcriptionist.
You will learn the different type of report
formats that medical transcriptionist use when transcribing for different types of doctors as well
as HISTORY Reports, Chart notes, SOAP reports and many others.
You will be transcribing hours of practice Dr.
Dictations to increase your knowledge and improve your success as a new MT.
These dictations
are digital and authentic physician dictations.
IV.
Forth
Part of the Course:
Final Part of
the Course:
Once you have
completed all of the other parts of our medical transcription course and you have done each of the
practice Dr. Dictations you will then move on to the assessments and finals of the
course.
All of your
transcription work and the grade report logs must be turned in MTatHome. You can retake your tests
if you need to at no additional fee.
Once you have turned
everything in you will start preparing your Resume and send it to us through e-mail for our staff
to review and edit if it needs to be. After your resume is complete we would start the Job Assistance
process.
